AFTERBURN REPORT 2003

LA CONTESSA LETTER

Dear ______________,

Thank you for your past participation at Burning Man. The Contessa was beautiful on the playa these past two years. Unfortunately its unsafe driving practices far exceeded community tolerance and out- weighed the visual contribution.

There were numerous offenses of speeding and driving at night with minimal or no lighting which led to run-ins with the Black Rock Rangers. Eventually the vehicle had to be disabled. Numerous sets of keys and drivers made it impossible to hold a single individual responsible. "Someone else took it out" was a common excuse. It repeatedly violated the principal tenet of Burning Man to "not interfere in another's direct experience". There were many complaints that people on the playa could not see it and were almost run down. Some folks expressed fear of going out on the open playa.

Every effort was made to work with you, far above and beyond the scope of our duties. Rangers and DMV were extremely generous in the amount of latitude you were shown. Law enforcement has expressed concern in a public meeting forum and they will be less tolerant of any bad behavior in the future. We will not risk any more potential danger.

As a result, the Contessa will no longer be allowed in Black Rock City.

Sincerely,

SHARK CAR LETTER

Dear _____________,

Thank you for your past participation at Burning Man. The Shark was beautiful on the playa. Unfortunately its unsafe driving practices far exceeded community tolerance and out-weighed the visual contribution.

Unfortunately there were numerous offenses of speeding and reckless behavior and which led to many run-ins with the Black Rock Rangers. The vehicle had to be disabled twice. I, personally, caught folks out with the motorbikes and ATVs after coming over to your camp and being very clear about what the expectations and rules were; then I had to chase people from your camp down three more times. Every time Rangers or I spoke to y'all, you were very pleasant, and said what you thought we wanted to hear, apologized, then went right back out and did it again.

You repeatedly violated the principal tenet of Burning Man to "Not interfere in another's direct experience".  You caused physical damage to other participants' property. Every effort was made to work with you, far above and beyond the scope of our duties. Rangers and DMV were extremely generous in the amount of latitude you were shown.

Law enforcement has recently expressed concerns about the Shark car in a public meeting forum. Burning Man will no longer tolerate potentially dangerous cars.  As a result, the Shark will no longer be allowed in Black Rock City.

Sincerely,

Grits aka
