AFTERBURN REPORT 2001Box Office
The box office is located at the gate to Black Rock City, is managed by the finance department and staffed by a select crew of a couple dozen fun, smart people, some of whom work on the year-round ticket fulfillment operation. It's a great crew that assembles on the desert, hailing from coast to coast and four countries. From Santa Cruz, Seattle, and British Columbia on the left coast to Connecticut, New Hampshire and Virginia on the right coast, Reno, Winnemucca, Salt Lake City and others in between, a full contingent from England, and even from The Netherlands.
The operation is 24 hours per day for 10 days delivering over 4,000 Will Call tickets and selling tickets to last minute purchasers. About half the crew in 2001 returned after having joined the year before. The experience and confidence of involvement the previous year made it a simple task of briefing the shift leads regarding refinements to the process and policies and an overview of the Burning Man Operations Manual and radio protocols. They in turn orient their shift members when they arrive for duty. Radios and pagers assure that assistance is always at hand for those wacky situations that keep things from getting routine.
Getting to interact with participants just as they are arriving on the playa is a unique opportunity we enjoy. Being far from camp, we take care of the need for munchies with a little stash in the office also equipped with a waffle maker.
The crew especially loves the goodies that are gifted to them by people picking up their tickets. We love to welcome you to the Playa but still recommend you buy your ticket early, keep it safe and we'll see you in Black Rock City 2002.
